About Bake Society

The Bake (pronounce Bahkuh) Society , was founded in 1984 as a counterpart to the Ethnomusicological Centre “Jaap Kunst”. The society, named after the musicologist and singer Arnold Bake, organizes conferences, seminars and workshops. The Bakesociety.net website contains the AB Newsletter and a variety of other information. The society also publishes the proceedings of its conferences in the English-language AB-series on the performing arts (formerly Oideion) and the Cultural Musicology online journal. The society is open to all professionals in the field; scholars, teachers, performers, organizers, critics, publicists, students. There are no restrictions to becoming a member – it is open to all who subscribe to the goals of the society; furthering studies of and undertaking projects in “the world of music | music of the world”. Students get a reduced fee.

The society functions as national committee to the International Council for Traditional Music (ICTM), and co-operates closely with other national and international institutions and organizations, such as the Department of Musicology of the University of Amsterdam, The Department of World music of the Rotterdam Conservatory, The Faculty of Creative and Performing Arts of the University of Leiden and the European Seminar in Ethnomusicology (ESEM).
